9/26 -- Ready.gov, a website created by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, offers short, instructional videos on how to prepare for disasters. Four videos, ranging in length from three to five minutes, are available on the website. The topics include older Americans, people with disabilities, pets, and general family preparedness. 9/20 -- One important step families can take to prepare in the event on an emergency is packing an emergency supplies kit. Emergency supplies kits, also referred to as go-kits, can be made using a large plastic bin or similar item. Supplies, such as non-perishable foods, medications, and blankets, are added to the kit, along with emergency contact information and the family emergency plan. The supplies need to be reviewed at least once a year or when the family's needs change, and the kit needs to be kept in a place that is easily accessible should the family need to evacuate quickly. There should be enough items for every family member in the household.
